Dr. Hal Varn was born and raised in Columbia, SC and graduated from Columbia High School in 1963. He attended the University of South Carolina and following graduation in 1967, he completed his masters in biology while teaching at Dreher high school. He and his wife, Sylvia, then moved to Charleston where he received his dental degree from MUSC in 1973, exactly 30 years prior to his daughter receiving her degree at the same institution. Dr. Varn then moved to Lugoff and entered into private practice in 1974.
Dr. Varn enjoys practicing with his oldest daughter, Allyson, and is happy to have his other daughter, Heather, living in Lugoff as well. This gives him ample opportunity to spoil his grandchildren every chance he gets! His Christian faith is very important to him, and he and his wife are active members of St. Timothy’s Lutheran church in Camden. He has many interests outside of dentistry. Most weekends, you will find him either outside in his yard working with the plants he loves so much or in his shop putting the finishing touches on his latest woodworking project. He is also a surprisingly talented baker and chef.
Dr. Varn has always believed in quality continuing education to stay up-to-date in his profession. He has completed studies with Dr. Pete Dawson and the continuum at the Pankey Institute. He was the first in the area to incorporate digital radiography and Cerec in to his practice. He is an active member of the South Carolina Dental Association and the American Dental Association. Dr Varn believes in giving back to the community and is involved with the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County and has been a member of the Camden Rotary Club for over 30 years. He and Dr. Allyson have also enjoyed dental mission trips to Central America and hope to go again together. Dr. Varn has been proud to call Lugoff home for decades and, although he retired at the end of 2018, you will still find him filling in at the office on a limited basis. Dr. Varn will always be a part of our Wateree Family Dentistry!
